CHRP Designation Information
In 2003 the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation became a national standard, managed by the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations. The Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario continues to be the granting agency in this province. The significant difference is that obtaining the CHRP requires two exams: a knowledge exam and an outcomes assessment. The national exams are offered twice per year, in May and October.
Though the new standards were launched in March of 2003, there is a 2-year transition period (to March 2005) to provide more time for students and educational institutions to adapt. During this transition, students may write either the provincial or national exams, as long as they have completed either the courses for the Comprehensive Provincial Exam (CPE) or those required under the national standard.
Members who plan to write in 2005 and beyond will be required to write the national exams and no more than 5 years after successfully completing the knowledge exam, write the outcomes assessment which assesses experience.
Starting in 2011, CHRP designation candidates will require a university degree. If you are presently taking courses toward your CHRP requirements and do not have a degree, you should register your status with HRPAO to be exempt from this requirement. You will have until December 2010 to complete your studies.
